Some advice for Tony Blair

"So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."

Matthew 6, vv2-4

Some advice for Paul Linford (from the Bible, various places).

1) Keep your word.
2) Don't lie.
3) Don't gossip untruths.

You might not go to hell if you stop all this amateur and uninformed commentary.

Amazing to see you quoting Christianity at Tony Blair. Isn't there something about hypocrisy here and there in scripture.

Hmmm... Interesting to see a Labor activist using a quote from the New Testament. What would Karl Marx (and Engels) made of this remembering that they had a bid downer on all beliefs. How is it Paul that you can be both a Marxist and a Christian? Which are you, and were you not a member of the SDP long ago?

Big assumption here is that Tony Blair is trying to do something charitable.

Remarkable number of uncharitable comments on here. I'm no believer myself, but historically, the Labour party has owed rather more to methodism than to Marxism

You are thinking of the historical origins of the trade union in the UK and the Co-operative Movement (all of whom discriminate against Christians these days). I am afraid to say that today's Labour Party have more communists than Christians and a mixture of Marxist dogma and political correctness reigns supreme.

As Stephen R points out, this post seems to have attracted an unusually large number of hostile comments (all anonymous/pseudonymous, natch). In the interests of balance, I've left most of them up, but there was one which I had to delete on the grounds of extreme offensiveness/inaccuracy.

Dear Paul

It has been most remiss of me for not earlier challenging the unhappy comment which you have now deleted

This is a generous-hearted Blogge which attracts lively observations

----- Whether they are in support or not, one is always entertained and (even for an Eagle with such a closed mind) informing

BUT perhaps you will forgive my echoing the first comment, albeit with a personal twist

.... if only this Eagle could practise what he believes

Remaining your obedient servant etc
