Seven good things in life

I love being tagged by the meme, and Kate - her of the Home Blog fame - has ensnared me with this one, so here goes:

  • Blogging. Well, obviously.

  • My family, and any time I get to spend with them.

  • Saturday evenings spent in the kitchen, concocting a curry or a Chinese over a glass of wine.

  • Sunday afternoons spent in the garden, planting things and lighting bonfires.

  • Jack and Sarah, Gavin and Stacey, and all sweet love stories.

  • Prefab Sprout.

  • Political idealism - an increasingly rare and precious commodity.

I'm going to tag some of the best up-and-coming new(ish) blogs to be found on my blogroll, namely:

Barnacle Bill, Unenlightened Commentary, Party Political Animal, A blog from the backroom, and Letters from a Tory

I love Prefab Sprout. Was very surprised to learn that Stevie Wonder played on Nightingale.

    1. Blogging. Well, yes.

    2. My family, and any time I get to spend with them. I know the numbers are mine, but if you're going to include them, then shouldn't they be at the top?

    3. Saturday evenings spent in the kitchen, concocting a curry or a Chinese over a glass of wine. This is just about the best thing in the world, isn't it? Cooking and drinking on Saturday nights. With some soul, funk or disco music playing, obviously.

    4. Sunday afternoons spent in the garden, planting things and lighting bonfires. That new garden of yours must be a decent size, if you can have bonfires!

    5. Jack and Sarah, Gavin and Stacey, and all sweet love stories. I've no idea who any of these people are. Is there something wrong with me?

    6. Prefab Sprout. Interesting...did you choose them because they're qualitatively good, or morally so, or because you knew everyone else would pick The Smiths?

    7. Political idealism - an increasingly rare and precious commodity. I don't think this is or has ever been rare amongst the young, but it's rarely seen in older people...especially if they're politicians.

Off the top of my head, and in alphabetical order, I'd probably pick the following:

    Alcohol
    Children laughing
    Cooking
    The Countryside
    Music
    Poetry
    Women's skin

I can see this leading to a Seven Bad Things list. Have you got yours ready?

They weren't in numerical order. And they were necessarily impressionistic - if you'd asked me on another day I might have said Saturday mornings spent in the garage chopping up bits of wood while listening to old compilation tapes, for instance. But I think my family would still be in there.

Jack and Sarah was a sweet film starring Richard E Grant and Samantha Mathis which came out in about 1995. It's about a guy (Jack) whose wife dies in childbirth who eventually falls in love with the nanny he employs to look after the baby (Sarah).

Gavin and Stacey is an award-winning BBC comedy about an Essex boy who falls in love with a Welsh girl. You clearly don't watch a lot of telly, and I don't blame you, but there is the odd jewel to be found if you look hard enough, and this lovable series was one such.

Prefab Sporout - well, someone needs to stick up for them. And while I do love the Smiths, there are at least four bands I love more.

It's good to hear that you are once again spending Saturday mornings to the sound of Ambient House...I bet that takes you back.

I usually ask the Duchess about films and stuff, especially the tissue-box variety, but I was puzzled by those pairings of first names, and wondered for a moment whether you'd had a bit of a turn and started following the exploits of celebrities.

You make television sound like a good record shop, where treasure is waiting for the daring adventurer.

But you love four bands more than The Smiths? Isn't there anything the doctors can do for you?

Consider it done Paul, many thanks for the encouragement, and you're all welcome to pop over to see my list.
