Will this send them all crazy?

Gordon Brown must surely by now be resigned to the fact that the good old, "Labour-supporting" Guardian clearly doesn't want him to succeed Blair.

But even against that backdrop, today's Guardian/ICM poll showing David Cameron 13 points ahead of him in a General Election will no doubt make extremely grim reading for the Chancellor, especially when coupled with the Blairites' ongoing attempts to propel David Miliband into the race.

When politicians fear that their seats are under threat, a sort of collective madness is apt to descend on them, as it did in the case of the Tory Party in 1990. Much more of this, and we could soon be seeing Labour MPs running round like headless chickens.

I shouldn't wonder that Brown might himself conclude that the long wait has gone on long enough, and make a further attempt to send Mr Tony on his way before things can get any worse....

Update: David Miliband has added a number of prominent bloggers to his blogroll. I suppose that given the content of recent posts I should not be too surprised that I am not among them.

I'm increasingly of the view that it would be Alan Johnson and not David Miliband who would challenge Brown for leader.

Could Tony Blair's true legacy be to make Labour unelectable for another generation?

Provided the police don't get there first, Gordon would prefer Blair to carry the can for the May elections. Blair gets his ten years and Brown gets a clean slate.

Miliband, unfortunately, will only serve to make Cameron look grown up. He must be one of the few men in the world who looks younger than his younger brother....

Also, of course, appalling...

Gran

Quite so. One of the reasons I believe it would be collective madness for Labour MPs to ditch Brown is that he really is their best asset against Cameron, and will show him up for the jumped-up PR man that he is.

True indeed. But it will still be nice to watch the bastards lose the election!

This poll is moody, but hopefully it will jolt the PLP into action.

This stupid stasis has got to end - they are handing it all over to the Tories.

Some coverage here of the 'Cameron took cocaine' story and I wonder if this and other stories about how privileged a toff he really is,(see Politaholic's current post) will not make Gordon seem a better 'man of the people' bet as the game continues.

Paul, Brown has not really shown any prowess that would make him a better leader of NuLabor than the poodle.
Also please do not forget he is as involved in the more murky dealings of NuLabor as the poodle.
Luckily as the spotlight falls upon him, the real Gordimmo, will be revealed to us all.
